What is NDOT

The National Day of Thanksgiving was launched by the Governor General earlier this year from Government House and is supported by the Prime Minister on behalf of the Federal Government.

It is a national day similar to Australia Day and Anzac Day but with the emphasis on encouraging Australians to express thanks and appreciation to others who have contributed something positive into their lives, or the life of the community in general, in the past 12 months.

The Governor General in launching the day said "What I find most exciting about the Day is that it provides scope for people to celebrate it in a personal, family, church or community-based way. It will offer the chance for people to do many and varied things."

Prime Minister John Howard said, “In Australia, Christianity has been an enormous force for good, shaping not only the individual lives of people but also the character of our nation . . . On this Day of Thanksgiving, as a nation, we have much to be thankful for.”

Opposition Leader, Kim Beazley said, “Thank you to the churches whose continuous and unselfish pastoral and temporal work gives comfort and help to those in need . . . Thank you to each and everyone who through their God and worship, or in other ways, make the effort to build a better Australia.”

Brian Pickering, co-ordinator of the National Day of Thanksgiving says, “This year we are focusing on thanking those who work in the health and education sectors of our community.."
